Getting increased website traffic doesn't have to be a struggle.
Maybe it's an old school of thought that for something to be effective, you have to go out and pay the person that is charging the most for it.
That might be true sometimes, but it doesn't apply here.
Social networking websites and Web 2.0 are becoming "all the rage". (Does anyone even say all the rage anymore?)
If you've got kids, you've probably heard them talk about MySpace or Facebook.
Originally, those sites were more popular with kids, but the savvy internet marketers found a way to drive people to their sites and landing pages and increase their conversions and profits as a result.
The site that I've used with the greatest success is Twitter.
Again, you're going to meet some resistance with anything new.
People are going to joke and laugh, especially when they don't see the business side of things. That's unfortunate, because if they own their own business, they're missing out on a valuable resource.
So, how does Twitter work?
It's a quick way (you're limited to 140 characters per status update) to share information.
There are rules and some online etiquette to be aware of, but the most important item of note is that you want to build relationships and trust.
If all of your status updates say something to the effect of, "Hey, go read/buy/get this!", then no one is going to pay any attention.
But, if you mix in updates with valuable (free) information and thought provoking statements that create conversation, then you'll be far better off.
People who respect and value your updates may even "retweet" them to their followers, spreading your message to a wider audience.
All in all, people may decide to take a look at your website, sign-up for your newsletter, and becoming a functioning part of your online and business community.
It's actually one of the least confusing sites for Web 2.0 that I've come across and it's something I'm sure I'll continue to use with great results in the future.
